As an artist and activist, Ali Raza Khan uses mixed media to bring visibility to marginalized voices. His work is recognized internationally, recently featuring at the Munich AIDS Conference 2024. His portfolio includes a diverse range of artistic expressions, from physical sketches to digital paintings, videos, and short documentaries.
Beyond his advocacy for LGBTQI+ rights and HIV awareness, Ali’s gallery explores themes of religious identity, peace-building, and the reality of mental health struggles. By documenting his own personal journey and the struggles of his community, he uses art to challenge stigma and promote healing. His collection is a guide through the difficult but beautiful parts of human life, seeking peace and understanding across borders.
The artwork I am most proud of and the one you can see featured in the gallery on my website is a very personal piece. I drew it on the thick cardboard cover of an old notebook. If you look closely at the image, you can still see the holes on the side where the metal rings used to hold the pages together.
In this sketch, I used my own naked body as the subject. I drew myself in many different positions within a room, but it isn’t a normal room. My body merges with the furniture. In one part, my body is upside down, and instead of a head, it merges into the wood of a bed. In another part, my leg is resting on a brick cupboard built into the wall, but the cupboard itself has human legs.
This image is more than just a sketch of a room; it is a guide. It is my own version of a “Gay Kamasutra.” The different positions of my body throughout the room represent different sexual positions and the connection between the physical self and the space we inhabit. In the center, there is a metal grill door, and to the left, a bed where different versions of my naked self interact.

When I heard about an art competition on “Peace Building” organized by Air University and the Multan Lions Club, I knew I had to participate.
My first attempt was a simple A4 sketch of the Quran and a key labeled “Peace.” But when an organizer challenged me to make it larger and more colorful, I went home and created the biggest artwork of my life. I used a large chart paper and expanded the concept. I painted a sea of golden keys much like the flying keys in Harry Potter. Each key represented a material distraction:
- Addictions: Cigarettes and alcohol.
- Desires: Sex, kisses, partner, and love.
- Materialism: Money, houses, and property.
- Escapes: Music, sports (football, cricket), and food.
I even included keys for “Suicide” and “Masculinity.” But none of these keys could open the heavy, jewel-encrusted wooden box labeled PEACE that sat in the corner of the painting.
In the center of the chart was the main focus: a large, beautiful key designed like the Quran, covered in green velvet with gold Arabic calligraphy. The “teeth” of the key were shaped to spell out the word PEACE. My message was clear: in a world full of material keys, the Quran was the only one that could unlock the box of true spiritual peace.
