As a gay individual living with HIV and a dedicated activist in Pakistan, my work has always sat at the intersection of research, activism, and art. Today, I am proud to announce the latest piece of my digital “Artivism” portfolio: The U=U Shield of Science Game.
In a country where HIV stigma is often fueled by silence and misinformation, I believe that technology and play can be the most powerful tools for education.
What is the “U=U Shield of Science”?
This game is more than just a high-score challenge; it is a visual representation of the scientific miracle known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).
In the game, you control my character as I navigate the challenges of daily life. To survive, you must catch the ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) medicine falling from the sky. As you do, a vibrant Rainbow Shield forms around me. This shield represents the reality of a suppressed viral load: when we take our medication and stay undetectable, we protect our health and ensure we cannot transmit the virus to others.
Why Artivism Matters in my HIV Research
This game is a core part of my ongoing research into how digital media can dismantle HIV stigma in the Global South. By turning medical adherence into a game mechanic, we strip away the fear and replace it with a sense of agency and power.
When you play this game, you are participating in a movement that says:
- Science is our strongest defense against stigma.
- A healthy, joyful life is possible for every PLHIV in Pakistan.
- Adherence is an act of self-love and community protection.
