The Playground of Hidden Tales: Protecting Innocent Stories

Children in rural and controlled environments often learn very early which parts of their lives they are allowed to show and which they must keep secret. During a documentation project in a village, I spent time listening to local youth share their daily stories. Many of these stories involved childish behaviors or innocent mistakes that the children felt immense pressure to hide from the adult world.

This photograph captures a moment of shared secrecy. Seven children, along with myself, stand together with both hands covering our faces. By shielding our identities, the photo removes the focus from individual features and places it entirely on the shared experience of guarded childhood. It is a visual reminder that young minds navigate complex social rules, and sometimes, safety lies in total anonymity.
