Rooting Inclusion: My Plantation Drive with Unilever Pakistan

In August 2019, I had the privilege of representing the gender-diverse community in a significant initiative led by Unilever Pakistan. At that time, Unilever was launching a major push for gender inclusivity—not just in their offices, but in their social and environmental projects across the country.

One of their most impactful activities was a nationwide plantation drive. In Multan, a representative from Unilever reached out to me, inviting me to join their team to lead the start of this green initiative.

I remember that day clearly because I was busy with my usual duties at SM Food. However, I felt this was too important to miss. I managed to take a short, one-hour break from my work and drove quickly to meet the Unilever team.

When I arrived at Model Town Road (now known as Multan Avenue), the Unilever workers were already there. Along with a friend, I was handed gloves, tools, and saplings. Together with the Parks & Horticulture Authority (PHA) Multan, we planted a long row of trees that still stand there today as a symbol of our collective effort for the environment.

What I appreciated most about Unilever’s approach was that it wasn’t just a “one-day” event. During that time, they carried out similar drives in Lahore and Karachi, specifically engaging with the transgender community. More importantly, Unilever backed up these symbolic acts with real action by providing jobs to deserving gender-diverse individuals, ensuring true inclusion in their workplace.

It was a proud moment for me. Thanks to some speedy driving, I was able to represent my community as a leader and return to my desk at SM Food within the hour.

This experience showed me how the private sector, both global and local, can be a powerful force for social good. When big companies use their resources to focus on climate work and gender rights simultaneously, they create a “double impact.” They help the planet breathe better, and they help marginalized communities feel seen and respected.

I hope to see more global entities follow this example—integrating diversity and environmental care into the very heart of their operations.
